More Than a Snack: The Family Story Behind Jarvah Biltong
There are foods that bring a place back to you. A familiar flavour, a shared bag, a conversation that carries on long after the rugby has finished. For me, biltong has always belonged in that company.
I started Jarvah to share a South African favourite with the country that became our home for eleven years. Whether you grew up with biltong or are opening your first bag, you are welcome at our table.
A family name, a shared purpose
Jarvah brings together the names of our two daughters, Zivah and Jarah. Before it was a brand, it was a reminder of the people we love and the responsibility to build something worthwhile.
Our faith shapes that work: gratitude to God, love for our neighbour and care in how we treat the people around us. Faith, family and food are the heart of Jarvah. They are why we say: Purpose You Can Taste.
The winged bull on our packaging draws on the traditional symbol of Saint Luke. For us, it is a reminder that a business can carry its convictions into ordinary things, including the food we share.
A South African favourite for British life
Biltong is seasoned, cured and air-dried meat, with a long place in South African food culture. At Jarvah, that tradition meets everyday life in the UK: a bag on the desk, something savoury for a journey, or a bowl passed around while the match is on.
You do not need a South African passport or an encyclopaedic knowledge of rugby to enjoy it. Start with a piece. We can explain the offside law later.
Original or Chilli?
Our biltong comes in Original and Chilli. Choose Original if you want to begin with the classic flavour, or Chilli if you enjoy a little heat.
The shop offers different sizes, so you can choose a bag for yourself or more to share. The 300g biltong is currently £21, with Original and Chilli options. Check the shop for the latest availability and delivery charges.
Make room for a small ritual
Open a bag when friends arrive. Put some out before kick-off. Bring it along to the next gathering. Good food gives us a reason to pause, pass something around and enjoy being together.
For South Africans in Britain, that may feel like a taste of home. For someone discovering biltong for the first time, it can be the beginning of a new favourite.
That is what I hope Jarvah becomes part of: ordinary moments made richer by the people around us.
